Jo Kreiter is the artistic director of a dance company based in San Francisco called Flyaway Productions. Kreiter's site performances have, since 1996, been able to direct attention to political issues of various San Francisco communities and in other places. Kreiter's company is known for utilizing complex apparatus that are able to launch dancers into high spaces; the physical prowess of women is exhibited through aerial movements and dances. She was initially influenced by Joanna Haigood's Zaccho Dance Troupe and how this company adopted a notion referred to as place memory. Kreiter attempts to incorporate not only a site's historical and architectural aspects into her works but also addresses community issues with a social or political goal.
