This chapter provides an overview of the development of archaeological policy, organization, and legislation in India, and discusses the current situation. In India, legislation is promulgated at both the national and the state level for the protection of archaeological heritage of the country. This chapter focuses on national legislation and policy, and the extensive body of state-level legislation that follows the pattern of the national legislation. It tries to look into the challenges faced by the Archeological Society of India and the various state departments of archaeology and highlights the need for special efforts in regard to the preservation of the cultural heritage.
