Juliet McMains explores the very different worlds of International style ballroom rumba and Cuban folkloric rumba, which includes the partnered dances yambú and guaguancó and the competitive dance columbia. She goes to Havana to find the origins of ballroom rumba in Cuba, where the dance partners Pierre and Lavelle studied before establishing an accepted international ballroom rumba in England in the 1950s. McMains' research becomes a kind of detective story in which she seeks to find out what Doris Lavelle and Pierre actually learned in Cuba and to find some connection between ballroom rumba and the very different neo-African creole Cuban rumbas.
