The Standing Committee of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting believed it was important to promulgate the true motives behind the manumissions. In their October 1777 assembly, the yearly meeting formally placed the statement adopted by the Standing Committee on the record. The statement asserted that “freedom is the Natural right of all Mankind, and that no Law Moral or Divine has given us a Right to or property in the persons of any of our fellow Creatures any longer than in a State of Minority…”
