At the close of World War I, the Dawson family moved south to Lancashire in England. There they found employment in the village of Millgate, in the Whitworth Valley. This chapter analyzes the factors behind Ellen Dawson family's departure from their Scottish home. In trying to understand what Dawson's life in Millgate must have been like and how her own individualism was being shaped during these years as she became a working woman, it is worth noting a popular literary genre of the period—the romantic tales of the “Lancashire Lass.”
