Early versions of scenes that differed greatly from their published forms are fascinating, as are extended passages that Joyce had apparently discarded entirely as he developed a particular episode. One very different scene involves a discussion of Ireland and Jews. Stephen Dedalus, entirely absent from the published episode, not only hobnobs here with the bigoted men in the pub but also offers the anti-Semitic answer to the question about a Jew loving his country, with J. J. O'Molloy, who answers “when he's quite sure which country it is” in the published version, now asking the question.
