For the tale of the USS Saginaw and her crew, maritime heritage falls under three different themes: what we choose to remember from the historical narrative (re-created here from documentary record); what we have left from the event as artifacts on shore; and what the sea has kept for us hidden beneath the waves. And all of these are associated with specific geographical locations: the National Archives; the Naval Academy at Annapolis; Mare Island, California; and Midway and Kure atolls. The legacy of the USS Saginaw and all of her Pacific passages lives on in these different ways.

Keywords: shipwrecks; USS Saginaw; artifacts; geographical locations; archives; U.S. Navy
