This book is a collection of twenty-nine disaster accounts from 1513 to 1548, ending with a discussion in which Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés offers a defense of his entire History against his critics and glories in his accomplishment. The book is a translation of the History in which Oviedo recounts his introduction to the New World when he arrived in 1514 at the Darién region of Panama in the expedition led by the infamous Pedro Arias de Avila. The book tackles the last book of his history—book fifty, Infortunios e naufragios acaescidos en las mares de las Indias, islas y Tierra Firme del Mar Océano (Misfortunes and Shipwrecks in the Seas of the Indies, Islands, and Mainland of the Ocean Sea), more simply referred to as the Naufragios (Shipwrecks).
