Eduardo Emílio Fenianos has authored what may be considered a significant postmodern book about São Paulo. Since São Paulo is a city of cultural experimentation dating back to the Semana de Arte Moderna, it is not surprising that Fenianos saw the potential for expanding on a grand scale the more modest experiment he had attempted in his native Curitiba. Fenianos's project, dubbed the Urbenauta, was to spend three months living in his jeep and touring his native city in order to produce a book interpreting its urban nature; this he did in 1998 under the title O Urbenauta: manual de sobrevivência na selva urbana (The Urbenaut; Manual for Survival in the Urban Jungle), and his account is accompanied by a series of photographic dossiers on each of Curitiba's neighborhoods, many of them still ethnic in nature. In 2002, Fenianos published Expedições Urbenauta: uma aventura radical (Expeditions Urbenaut: A Radical Adventure). The Urbenauta's “radical adventure” is a unique project designed to attain a comprehensive understanding of São Paulo.
