This chapter discusses the details of German attacks on the US ships Leelanaw, Lanao, Columbia, and Chemung. In every case, the Germans explained that their attacks were in conformity with international law, and the issue was handled by exchanges of diplomatic notes. The reasons that all of the incidents described in this and the previous chapter did not cause war between the United States and Germany are discussed.
