Shortly before his departure for exile, the author of this book took one last vuelta with his family. A vuelta was a leisurely walk—or drive—about the city. From that vantage point, this chapter describes and evokes the Matanzas he left in 1961. The narrative visits the city topography and urban layout, the main sites and monuments, explaining how they came about and how they related to everyday life. The classic Matanzas vuelta was a promenade around Liberty Square, one of the town's preeminent civic spaces, where many events discussed later on took place. The chapter closes with the author's departure for exile.
