This chapter discusses the settlement and chronology of the Maya farming community of Chan. Two key techniques from archaeology, settlement survey and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), allowed researchers to understand Chan's changing cultural landscape across its 2000-year history. The Chan settlement survey included a 3.2 square kilometer settlement area and identified 274 households surrounding a small community center and 1,223 agricultural terraces.
