This chapter examines 1,500 paleoethnobotany samples collected from over 700 contexts by the archaeology team at the Maya farming community of Chan. Paleoethnobotanical studies illustrate that for two millennia Maya farmers at Chan established forest maintenance strategies that allowed the mature tropical forest to thrive.
