This chapter details events in Fritz Lang’s life from 1923 to 1924. With the films of Der müde Tod and Doktor Mabuse, der Spieler under his belt, Lang cemented his place as one of the greatest directors in Germany. Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou also became one of the German film world’s most glamorous couples. His latest film at this time, Die Nibelungen, which premiered on February 24, 1924, remains one of the breathtaking wonders of the silent screen. The spectator is swept along on a journey to a mythic time of dwarfs, ogres, giants, and dragons; a place of spectacular landscapes and grandiose settings; a world of primal images and emotions. On October 2, 1924, Lang sailed from Hamburg, aboard the S.S. Deutschland for the American premiere of Die Nibelungen.
