This chapter analyzes publications about Jin Xing for what they reveal of the cultural values, assumptions, and expectations that accompany the construction of her celebrity status in contemporary mainland China. It also examine Jin's self-description together with how she is represented in Chinese and English publications to compare her views on her own gender identity with those of her commentators. It concludes with a brief examination of how Jin Xing's public persona has helped to normalize transsexuality in contemporary Chinese culture but with the effect of affirming rather than resisting gender conformity.
