This chapter examines the fascination with Idol formats, including industrial formats as well as generic variants and clones. It examines the evolution of Idol shows in China and Hong Kong, focusing on the Super Girl phenomenon within China. While talent formats sound familiar in the light of the global Idol franchise, they were a new phenomenon in mainland China, attracting the attention of cultural and industry critics who proclaimed a new stage of development in TV culture. Super Girl took south China by storm, with huge numbers of registered applicants.
