This chapter demonstrates that telecom manufacturers are not the isolated profit-maximising firms of neo-classical economics, simply standing at one end of a chain of production and creating capital goods that are turned into services somewhere down the line. Instead, they are part of a process of innovation in which their customers and customers' customers are intimately involved in the search for and selection of new ideas. It also argues that the industry structure and market orientation of some Asian countries has worked in favour of this process, materially benefiting the development of their telecom industries.
