This chapter presents an overview of suicide in Taiwan to set out a timely and cost effective measure for preventing suicide in the future. It first presents the epidemiological profile of those who have died by suicide and the methods employed, using the official data for 1983–2003. It also evaluates whether there is a significant geographical variation between the urban and rural areas due to substantial discrepancies of living standard, income inequality, financial resources, transportation links, and public facilities between two areas.
