Charles Henry and his young wife moved to China during the nineteenth-century, and it is important to note that during this period, China was undergoing an interesting phase in its history. During the nineteenth century, the Ch'ing dynasty went through internal conflicts and external belligerence and these initiated several shocks. Some progressive senior mandarins expressed the need for changes in terms of commerce and administration, defence, and industry, and there were developments in both education and communication to strengthen China. This chapter aims to provide a background to the circumstances of the area during this specific period through utilizing well-known sources, as well a framework of analysis that may aid in understanding other aspects of the period.
