This chapter contains an account of the battle against Japanese invading forces and describes the defence of Hong Kong during the period between December 8 and December 25, 1941. It reports that Japanese planes started strafing and bombing Hong Kong and Kowloon indiscriminately, causing widespread destruction of buildings and heavy loss of life amongst the Chinese population. Dense, black clouds of smoke lay heavily over the bombed area. It describes the dreadful scene of mutilated bodies of the dead and dying lying scattered along the roads and pathways, and vehicles of all types completely wrecked and burning fiercely. The whole situation appeared to have become a complete shambles in a very short period of time. On December 25, 1941, Governor Sir Mark Young and the GOC Major General Maltby officially surrendered to General Sakai, the Japanese Commander.
