Several Chinese terms were coined in describing male same-sex relations in the period under discussion in this book and as such, it could be assumed that such issues were not unspoken about during the twentieth century's first few decades in China. While some of the words included in this vocabulary were derived from figurative language and local slang, others were related to Western sexological terminology and historical stories. First, the chapter identifies the origins of these words and how these were related to the concepts under the Western sexological notion of homosexuality. Chinese thoughts regarding these issues offer ground for the dissemination of Western homosexuality in terms of comparable conceptual contradictions. Attention is particularly drawn to the relationship between the meaning of sex and the social and political context attributed to time.
