This chapter examines fortification in Macau during the years of peace in the eighteenth century. During this period, the construction of forts stopped. This may have been due to the fact that at this time there was no obvious threat from other European nations. In addition, the Portuguese authorities at home were less interested in Macau because gold had been discovered in Brazil and it became the first priority of Portugal's rulers.
