This chapter examines the role of the Portuguese navy in the defense of Macau. It was recognized that during the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries one of the strengths of the Portuguese was their ships, and when anchored at Macau these ships provided excellent protection against any attack from the sea. After the forts were built the navy played a lesser role in defense but they were continued to be utilized against pirates.
