This chapter discusses the social and political changes that occurred in China during the 1950s. As expected, these changes had a deep effect on Huang Binhong and Fou Lei. Binhong was forced to adhere to the new, mass-oriented artistic policy, while Lei lived in seclusion and relied completely on translating books. The chapter describes Lei's visit to Binhong's house before the gathering in Shanghai, and presents the different paintings Binhong created in the 1950s. Binhong even dedicated some of these paintings to Lei.
