In April 1925, a few months before King Vajiravudh's death, Walter traveled to Bali for the first time. Through Yogyakarta's sultan, he had been introduced to the head of the village district of Ubud, Tjokorde Gde Rake Sukawati, who, like the sultan, was interested in Western art and music. The decisive moment came one night in mid-April when Walter and Sukawati entered a temple courtyard. There, Walter saw what he described in a letter to a friend the next day as the most important and essential of all that he has seen in Bali so far.
