In Thailand, the rise to power of a popular new prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, led to a “social and moral order” campaign to clean up Thailand's image as a sex and drug center, but it also resurrected long-standing themes about the “need” to reconstruct the image of Thai manhood—a discourse that stretches back through imperial days. Police sweeps included a raid on Babylon that is described and then analyzed in terms of Thaksin's attempt to sculpt a new representation of Thai manhood.
