Next this chapter moves forward to December 21. The battle for Hong Kong at this point entered its final stages. A British gunboat in Hong Kong, HMS Cicala, was sunk by Japanese bombs. One of its crew, Chief Petty Officer Gilbert Thums, joined the motor torpedo boat flotilla and later became a key figure in the escape.
