On New Year's Eve, December 31, preparations were made for the onward journeys of members of the escape party. Some of the group stayed in Waichow. Others took river barges on a five-day journey to Longchuan, some 150 miles up river. This proved to be a dangerous journey, with Japanese aeroplanes and patrols close by.
