This chapter examines the Battle of Middle Creek, fought in eastern Kentucky on January 10, 1861. During this battle, the Union army was led by future president James A. Garfield, while the Confederate army was led by long-time politician Humphrey Marshall. Garfield successfully led the Union to slow yet systematic Confederate forces from Kentucky, which would ultimately restrict the Southern army to the western wedge of southwestern Virginia.
