This chapter examines the final period of the American Civil War during the period from October 1864 to April 1865. The final battlefield was Saltville in Virginia. This chapter discusses the violence of this battle, including Confederate officer John C. Breckinridge's accusation of a Confederate massacre of Black union soldiers and his allegations that a high-ranking officer might have taken part in the killings. It also explores the violence associated with efforts to establish peace in the South.
