Bill DePuy thought that it was important that a person should not be totally consumed by their career. DePuy and his family stayed in England in 1960, and it was there that they made lasting friends. DePuy's brief responses to interview questions, especially regarding his experiences, demonstrate how he was able to exercise precision and conciseness in professional writing and speech. In December 1959, his family moved to London, where his children were sent to school. As Colonel William DePuy became in command of the 30th Infantry's 1st Battle Group in Schweinfurt, Germany, he pointed out that officers who were used to the regimental system were conditioned to battalion commanders directing colonels and companies directing battalions.
