General William E. DePuy's retirement ceremony took place on June 30, 1977. One of the first things he did after his retirement was to try a Roy Rogers Sandwich as he had never had fast food before, and his children recalled how DePuy was fond of purchasing cheap wine glasses since he was rarely able to visit a store. His Son Bill recalled that the last four years in which DePuy served as TRADOC Commander marked his long service's culmination. Although it would take time before the doctrine, weapon systems, and training become integrated across the whole army, they eventually did. During his retirement, however, it was discovered that DePuy had acquired Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) which may well be described as a variant of “mad cow disease” which he had caught through eating monkey meat. William E. DePuy died in Arlington Virginia on September 9, 1992.
