While X Corps commander General Almond advised that Wonju be immediately reoccupied by the 2d Division, General McClure asserted that establishing the defense of the Wonju area would be difficult and that a better defense line may be built in an area many miles south of the town on high ground. Although Almond acknowledged how the defense would be difficult, he continued to assert that the high ground should be retained so that UN forces would be able to establish a strong defense in which the town would be dominated by the artillery. After the reoccupation of Wonju, the 2d Division commanded that the 23d Infantry Regiment send a battalion toward the town. The Ch'ungju road and the Chech'on road were thus patrolled and the 3d Division and the 23d Infantry monitor the various orders received.
