The offseason began soon after the Grand Valley women's basketball team defeated Northern Kentucky University on the Drury's court. At the team dinner after the game, Coach Nancy Winstel announced that Grand Valley would be one of the teams coming to the Regents Hall for the Christmas tournament. This announcement raised the bar not only for the upcoming season but also for the summer. As soon as final exams were over, each player's responsibilities to the team were officially suspended until the beginning of the fall semester on August 21. So were Winstel's opportunities to coach her players: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations forbid coaches to coach their teams between the spring and fall semesters. Even so, the players remained devoted to the team—and to one another—throughout the summer months.
