This chapter discusses Hal Ashby's excitement in his first job as a film director. In the seven months or so since his mentor, Norman Jewison, had told him he would be directing his first film, The Landlord, a nagging doubt had been eating away at him. Ashby was terrified and sick, but there was a part of him that was buzzing with excitement. He could not let this chance pass him by. He had worked for almost fifteen years as a film editor, won an Oscar for film editing and his dedication to his work had cost him so much, including two marriages.
