This chapter discusses the events that led to the statehood of the Mississippi Territory. It is noted that by the time the Mississippians sought statehood, the process for adding new states was well established. On December 10, 1817, President Monroe officially signed the act admitting Mississippi into the Union as the twentieth state of the nation.
