The U.S. stock market crashed and the Great Depression began on October 29, 1929. Von Sternberg's hostility and Marlene Dietrich's passive acceptance of it fueled their relationship. To adore a woman and to have her, in return, admire him and cater to his every sexual whim, yet feel no love, gratified his most profound masochistic desires. Frederica Sagor, no friend of von Sternberg either, shrewdly assessed their attraction. Von Sternberg's sexual weakness was something that she, in her sophistication and worldly outlook on life, could handily take care of.
