Von Sternberg visited an art gallery in Chicago to purchase Georg Grosz's 1924 watercolor Married Couple during the delay between the arrival of the Twentieth Century from New York and the departure of the Superchief for Los Angeles. Few pictures are more emblematic of von Sternberg's sexuality or so singularly appropriate to the film he was about to make. Almost every von Sternberg film takes place in a few claustrophobic locations. Blonde Venus is the exception. The story moves from Germany to New York, the Deep South, then Paris, and back to New York.
