After Charles Summerall reached Eustis, Florida, a telegram arrived that offered him the presidency of the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, which he accepted. His retirement from the military was effective March 31, 1931. In June, he drove to Charleston for the commencement at the Citadel. Colonel Bond, the retiring president, and Mrs. Bond gave him a reception. He entered on his duties as president of the Citadel on September 12, 1931.
