This chapter tells the tragic story of the 1st Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment, the 29th British Independent Infantry Brigade Group, which was overrun and largely captured while stubbornly holding Hill 235 to slow the Chinese offensive. The Chinese took advantage of a vulnerable front line with many gaps and only two units in reserve and were able to overwhelm the regiment and push them back. The situation was eventually considered too desperate and reserves were committed to other areas. The Glosters withdrew while fighting back and attempted to hold the Chinese forces as long as they could before their imminent defeat.
