This chapter retraces the hard combat of Company C, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division south of the Soyang River. The main Chinese attack was focused at the 2d Infantry Division and designed to separate the Americans from the ROK divisions. The enemy would then attack the UN forces in the rear. The key element in the Chinese plan was a rapid destruction of the 38th Infantry Regiment, which they began to do. As soon as there was a break in the fighting, Company C came to the aid of the 38th Infantry Regiment and broke up the enemy attack. Their task was to hold the line until further troops could be relocated. Company C was eventually forced to withdraw, however, they had slowed the Chinese Offensive long enough for the UN forces to provide support and stop the attack.
