In this chapter, like the previous two, stories are told. Manar Shalash, Sawsan Salem and Renee Hymson are introduced to make maternal lives visible. Muslim Manar and Sawsan are contemporary mothers in Kentucky openly balancing multiple demands like any other mother, whereas, the maternal juggling act that Jewish Renee performed during an earlier era, in the 1950s and 60s, went undetected by others. Renee, Manar, and Sawsan in the past and currently face larger reactions that underestimate and negate the full reality of their lives.
