The introduction outlines the importance of a study of the lengthy interim period of retreat after the invasion of Normandy from August to September 1944. As a complete study solely on the basis of German military records is impossible, the book will also consider the operational objectives of the Allies and their problems of coalition warfare. Compared to the events on the Eastern Front during 1943-1945, the scholarly work on the ground operations against the Western Allies has had much less attention. Using unpublished records from the German Federal Military Archives, specifically the files of the Supreme Command West, in addition to material of the subordinate commands and the personal notes of Colonel Generals Alfred Jodi and Otto Desslock, the author investigates this often ignored period of the German retreat.
