Francis Carston FBA, fled from Nazi Germany in 1936, first to Amsterdam and then in 1939 to Wadham College, Oxford, eventually settling in London and becoming a British citizen in 1946. He taught German and Austrian history and wrote prolifically, most centrally on the crucial problem of Central European history in the twentieth century, why democracy had failed and what had prepared the way for fascism.
