Returning to W. B. Yeats, this chapter dwells over a reading of Yeats’s great meditation on death and the afterlife, ‘All Souls’ Night’, and how it is used by McGahern to write one of his finest short stories, ‘The Wine Breath’. In the process of doing this it also looks at Yeats’s short story ‘The Old Men of the Twilight’ and his play The Land of Heart’s Desire. This is also the first chapter that begins to think closely about McGahern’s final novel That They May Face the Rising Sun.
