This chapter presents historian Franklin W. Knight's memoirs, which trace how he became interested in history. At high school, Knight took a specialized course in history but did know until he entered the university that being a historian could be a useful occupation. He liked creative writing, which was required in writing history. Knight believes that growing up in Jamaica somehow influenced his decision to become a historian.
