This chapter examines the renditions of Chicago by different types of observers. It describes how the street-level and panoramic visions of urbanism have been expressed by a variety of observers and discusses the evolution of these observers' self-consciousness. This chapter argues that the more coherent rendition of Chicago is the panoramic normativeness of its city planners, whose presentations have typically imagined a sleek, well- ordered, postindustrial metropolis.
