This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is the ethnography of opera fanatics. This volume explores the affectionate character of the attachment to opera and how it is used as a meaningful activity that allows passionate fans to fabricate meaning in and of their own lives and to craft themselves as worthy individuals. It discusses the results of eighteen months of ethnographic research on opera practices at the Colón Opera House in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the 2002–2005 seasons.
