Scholars have used a ready method to locate the transition from modernity to postmodernity—the postmodern moment—and the decisive intrusion of consciously postmodernist thought into the world of modernity. They have traced early appearances of the term postmodernism. Four such cases have been located for the period prior to 1946. The postmodern moment was at hand when the concepts of postmodernity and postmodernism emerged as serious challengers to those of modernity and modernism in the debates on Western culture's development. That occurred after two of modernity's key premises lost their aura of certainty for many.
