On Valentine's Day, 1896, Henry Fairfield Osborn accepted the unwelcome resignation of Olof August Peterson, his skilled field assistant, who had worked for Osborn's department at the American Museum of Natural History for five years and was an expert fossil hunter. Fed up with his menial position, Peterson elected to accompany his brother-in-law, John Bell Hatcher, an ingenious fossil collector and geologist, on a Princeton expedition to Patagonia. His sudden departure left Osborn without a reliable field hand.
